T: Singing while gutting and the Foy
S: It
was mostly hymns that the gutting girls sang, Sankey Hymns. The
Foy was a celebration, a big party, a long while back. [Helicopter
going overhead.] GS explains Dutch connection with 'Foy'. The Dutch
used to come to Keith Inch and gut and pack herring, right up until
the late nineteenth century. There were still Dutch fishermen till
then. The men would gut on these boats. GS asks if they have heard
a song about the Foy. [Bit about GS and Peterhead Maritime Heritage
Centre research.]

T: Stranded in Greenland through the First World War
S: When
JD was fishing with his father, there was a cook who went away whaling.
When he came back after the war, his girlfriend was married, with
children and widowed. A ready-made family. GS asks about David Cardno.
Frieda Cameron (maiden name) was one of the cook's grandchildren.

T: Peterhead
in the World Wars
S: Discussion about a possible memorial commemorating the
role of Peterhead in the wars. It was a harbour of refuge. There
was a full admiral (Simpson) here in the war. JD's father was skipper
of the Peggy, the admiral's barge. There is a model of it in the
cycle shop. GS says the Simpsons were a big whaling family. The
harbour master always wore a uniform and was always a retired deep
sea man. Peterhead has always been a busy harbour. There used to
be a lot of cargo in the old days (barrel staves and such like).

T: Coopers' riots
S: They
have heard of the coopers' riots (to do with the re-use of barrels).
Latterly they used plastic barrels. There must be barrels around
the town yet. GS says it is very hard to find one now. [Daughter
comes in.]

T: Family background and galas
S: JD born in Buchanhaven. AB's maiden name is Angus and
she is related to Bairds as well. GS may be related. More on AB's
family background. There were also carters who brought all the barrels
for shipment, among other things. There was always a gala at the
end of the fishing.

T: Oil money comes to Peterhead
S: The Shetlanders have made a better job getting oil money
than around Peterhead, as they owned their own land. Plenty of people
get a good living out of oil in Peterhead. Oil business has put
fishing out of Aberdeen harbour. The oil piers in Peterhead are
reclaimed sea, filled in. The fishing has continued.
